Higher entities

i remember my mom once told me, "People arent really religious until they need it. People dont believe in god unless they need a miracle or are in trouble." 
It just dawned on me that, well, shes right. Im not really spiritual, unless I need it. I cant speak for other people, but from my viewpoint, shes right.
I take breaks from spirituality for months or even years, until im in trouble & need it. My beliefs have retained, but it just hasnt been practiced heavily, or even entered my mind since.
I havent talked to anyone about this, so i wouldnt know if other people are the same but I would really like to know. Does anyone relate to this at all?
