When I was in elementary school, I went to a basketball camp.  I am the least athletic person ever and I had undiagnosed social anxiety disorder, so I'd assume you can understand how that went.  One day, there was an outdoor lunch day where we sat in the grassy area outside of the gym.  While eating, I accidentally said, "Damn,"  and some kid looked at me with a kind of grossed out reaction and informed me that it was a cuss word.  I was starting to freak out that I, a small child, had the audacity to make a spoken mistake.  I was starting to get closer to a panic attack when another kid covered for me and said something along the lines of, "I never knew dang was a bad word.  She said dang it, right?" and looked at me.  I just kind of nodded.  I think about this kid a lot.
